- Training – If you haven’t taken part in any training the best thing you can do even before going for an interview is to take part in our S11 Induction and Machinery Training courses. These will help you stand out from the other applicants vying for the same job. It shows you not only have the initiative to gain some invaluable experience, you also show commitment to the role you’re applying for. Another advantage being you will gain a certain degree of invaluable first-hand knowledge of the industry, along with the operations of Dump Trucks, Water Carts, Loaders, etc. You’ll even pick up some of the mining lingo used on sites, which may sound like another language at first.
- Job Ready Pack – Once you complete the training you will receive the My Solution Training “Job Ready Pack”, which will give you a valuable list of companies that employ for the industry and the steps on how to create automatic job alerts to give you a greater chance of being one of the first to apply for a job. Even if you aren’t hopeful with a particular employer, you never know where it could lead, so have a go and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you aren’t sure where to start.
- Resume – Create a stellar resume. This is such an important thing to have as this is your first introduction to the employer so it is vitally important to “get it right”. Click on the resume link to see where we can help you stand out.
- Employment Companies – Use our Job Ready Pack to assist you to set up your employee profile with the companies provided in the pack as well as job sites, including Seek, Jobrapido, Jora, etc.
- Experienced Roles – Keep an eye on the more experienced roles advertised also, because while My Solution Training has supplied plenty of mining companies that offer entry-level roles, there may be a big operator you’d like to work for that only takes experienced staff. However, if you’re determined enough, you can hit your target.
- Facebook / Linked In – Go to Facebook and LinkedIn then Like the pages of the mining and recruiting companies that employ staff in mining as they can post jobs on their social sites.
- Call Companies – Be proactive and pick up the phone. Sending an email is likely to get lost in the landslide of daily emails in a recruiter’s inbox, so give yourself a personality and phone on a regular basis to see if there are any jobs available.
- Mine sites – Conduct some research on what mines are live sites in the remote Australian regions known for resources. While My Solution Training aims to provide you with a comprehensive list of employer contacts, job recruitment is not our primary role, so there is a chance we may have missed some of the companies and mines.
- Widen your scope – If you’ve been looking at Mount Isa, so your FIFO is Queensland-based, there may be a great job in Port Hedland, WA, you miss out on. You may surprise yourself and find you love working in your new community. At the very least, you’ll have gained enough experience to increase your chances of a better job closer to home.
- Mining News – Read the mining news to find out where the next projects will be located, then get onto recruiters and search for the jobs that are coming up.
- Civil Earthmoving Companies – Research the civil earthmoving companies that are sub-contracted to mine sites. This is a clever way to gain employment in the mines because you’re onsite and working under the same regulations, plus you’re bunked in mining camp accommodation with the miners, who may know a thing or two.
- Trades / Other Roles – If you have diverse work experience or a trades ticket this may help you get your foot in the door, as there are roles for trades assistants, offsiders, utility workers, etc. It may not be the role you want but gaining some experience in the industry will always help.
- Don’t Give Up – When you’re feeling defeated, the best thing to do is to pick yourself up by reading some success stories. It may take up to you longer than you thought to gain a mining job. So by taking note of someone who never thought they’d make it into mining employment finally land a job, you can identify with their journey and feel better about your own. The My Solution Training website has loads of success stories and you might even find some additional tips to help win you that role.
SUCCESS STORY
A My Solution Training student who resided in Qld took a role in WA that required a local worker. They put their belongings in storage, rented out their property for 6 months and flew to WA. Rather than rent a place in WA once they arrived, they opted to save money by booking short-term stays during their weeks off and hired a car and travelled throughout the local region. They saw much of the state and stayed in different areas, enjoying the sites, tastes and delights that the wildflower state has to offer.
During their contract, they poured money into their mortgage – and with the addition of their tenant back home paying rent as well, they managed to reduce their home loan repayments by years. Once they returned to Qld, they were able to walk into their dream job.
Once you’re in the mining industry, you’re in
Maybe this story does not fit your lifestyle, yet you could adapt it to suit yourself. Once you have your foot in the door in mining, it usually doesn’t take very long to get another job. So by accepting a job in another remote region, far away from family and friends, you can be practical about the commitment and realise it’s only for a short period, while you continue to apply for roles closer to home.
Most people who take a job in another state often find that within 3 months they have been able to relocate to an area more suited to their needs.
Short-term pain for long-term gain
This strategy of chipping away at your end goal by looking at the big picture and making small inroads towards your objective has been a very successful way of gaining employment in mining for many people.
You might surprise yourself and find you love the location of your new job and never want to leave.
