Dump Truck Training

Course Overview

The RIIMPO338E – Conduct Rigid Haul Truck Operations course is a nationally accredited training program designed to teach participants how to safely and confidently operate a rigid haul truck, commonly known as a dump truck.

Rigid haul trucks are widely used throughout mining operations to transport large quantities of material. Despite their impressive size, their relatively straightforward operation can make them an excellent machine for people looking to develop practical skills and begin pursuing opportunities within the mining industry.

My Solution Training takes a hands-on approach, providing participants with dedicated one-on-one training using real mining equipment. You’ll operate a CAT 773 rigid haul truck while developing practical experience in an environment designed to replicate the conditions, procedures and communication requirements encountered within mining operations.

The course is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced operators and focuses on developing the practical skills, safety awareness and confidence required to operate heavy machinery effectively.

Dump Truck Training

What This Course Teaches

The Dump Truck Training course provides practical experience across the key procedures involved in safely operating a rigid haul truck within a mining environment.

What You’ll Learn

During your training, you’ll develop practical skills and knowledge across a range of rigid haul truck operations, including:

  • Conducting pre-start machinery inspections and identifying potential defects
  • Understanding the truck’s interior controls and cabin equipment
  • Applying correct horn signalling procedures
  • Using positive radio communication techniques
  • Following mine-site machinery safety protocols
  • Safely operating a rigid haul truck
  • Driving the truck both empty and loaded
  • Operating safely around other heavy machinery
  • Performing emergency braking procedures
  • Maintaining control in slippery conditions
  • Reversing safely towards an excavator or Front End Loader
  • Positioning the truck correctly to receive a load
  • Transporting material safely around the site
  • Applying correct dumping techniques
  • Completing production forms and operational documentation
  • Following equipment tagging and isolation procedures

Develop Practical Dump Truck Operating Skills

The practical nature of the training gives participants the opportunity to become familiar with the size, controls and operating characteristics of real mining machinery while developing confidence through hands-on operating experience.

This practical approach also helps participants develop an understanding of the safety procedures, communication methods and day-to-day operating requirements associated with rigid haul truck operations.

Dump Truck Training

Course Specifics

A major focus of the course is providing participants with dedicated practical operating time. You’ll receive your own trainer and practical access to the truck, allowing the training to progress at a pace appropriate to your experience, confidence and operating ability.

This one-on-one format is designed to maximise your time behind the controls rather than dividing practical operating time between a larger group of students, giving you more opportunity to develop the skills required to operate the machinery safely and confidently.

Real Mining Equipment

Training is completed using a CAT 773 rigid haul truck, providing participants with hands-on experience operating real mining equipment.

This practical approach allows you to become familiar with the controls and operating characteristics of a large rigid haul truck while gaining experience with the procedures and working environment commonly associated with mining operations.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced machinery operators. To participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a current driver’s licence
  • Hold a minimum of a provisional/P Plate licence
  • Have sufficient English language and comprehension skills to understand safety instructions and complete the written components of the course

A learner licence is not accepted. The existing course information also states that participants do not require a manual or HR licence to complete the training, with an automatic licence being acceptable.

Training Packages

Dump Truck Training can also be packaged with additional mining courses, including:

  • Articulated Haul Truck / Moxy Training
  • Water Truck Training
  • Standard 11 (S11) Mining Induction

Participants interested in completing multiple qualifications can contact My Solution Training to discuss available mining course packages and suitable training combinations.
