  • WANT TO LEARN TO DRIVE MACHINERY ON A SITE WORKING UNDER THE MINES ACT? Read below We are guessing that the reason you are looking at this course is to gain entry into the mining industry. Well, you are looking at the right course! Whilst there are many other machines used in the mining industry, the Dump Truck is the most used (therefore there are always more jobs on offer) and, in the 8+ years that we have been conducting training, we have not seen many other entry level roles being advertised, except for the Water Truck (which we discuss further down). Even if you have not driven a large vehicle before, driving a dump truck/water cart is much easier than it looks. The maximum speed you are expected/allowed to drive is 30-40kms per hour and the trucks are semi-automatic so there is no clutch. You will receive one-on-one training at our site (which operates under the mines act) in Ipswich, and be taken through the following tasks :-
    • Pre-start machinery checks – this is where you will learn to walk around the truck looking for any defects and completing reports regarding any issues
    • Positive radio communications
    • Horn signalling
    • Driving machine
    • Reversing of Dump Truck up to Excavator
    • Being loaded by Excavator
    • Driving around site with load
    • Dumping load in safe manner
    • Emergency braking
    • Working in all weather conditions
    • Driving around site with other operators / machinery
    You will be removing overburden (which is the dirt and material above the coal) and dumping in piles for the Dozer operator to push into landfill. *You do not require a manual licence to do this course, an automatic licence is fine (additionally, you do not need a HR licence to drive the machines on a mine site either as the land is privately owned) This course is designed to give you knowledge of the machines, confidence driving the machinery and experience working on an active site so that when you go for an interview, you can go with the confidence that you are capable of operating the machines and show the employers that you are a pro-active person willing to invest in your future. BULK WATER TRUCK OPERATIONS The other entry level machine for the mining sector is the Water Truck. The body of the Water Truck is the same as the Dump Truck so, if you decide to learn both machines, you will already gain driving experience and pos comms, horn signalling etc no matter which machine you are in. The remainder of the training will concentrate on teaching the correct release of water to assist with dust suppression on site. This Water Cart Operation is a very important job on site as it is designed to minimise the dust and having this qualification will assist you in becoming a multi-skilled operator. When on site, if a dump truck operator calls in sick or is not available, the mine can deal with being short a worker, however, if the Water Cart operator is not there, they have to replace them due to the importance of dust suppression so, if they have someone with the ticket, that employee becomes more valuable. This course can be done in addition to the Dump Truck with no extra time required as you will still be gaining adequate time in the seat, regardless of which machine you are in. There is one other course that is very important in the industry and that is the S11 Induction S11 MINING INDUCTION The course teaches you mine site safety protocols and is required on most QLD mines to even step foot on the site (and is now being recognised more and more in NSW & WA). We run this over 2 days at the same site as the dump truck course. The course is run on a weekly basis – generally on a Wednesday and Thursday so that you can fit the machinery course around it. At the end of the course you will be given a full Statement of Attainment that lasts 5 years. This covers:-
